IDRIC Annual Policy Report published

December 23, 2022

Next steps for decarbonising UK industry

Policy and regulation are crucial for accelerating industrial decarbonisation in sectors where emissions reductions have so far been difficult to realise.

Bringing together insights from a year of extensive stakeholder engagement with IDRIC partners in industry, academia and governments, the IDRIC Policy Synthesis Report 2022 outlines key areas where policy and regulatory change can make a difference in supporting industrial decarbonisation.

The report discusses seven priority areas for industrial decarbonisation policy:

  1. Business model support for scaling up low-carbon technologies
  2. Enabling fuel switching and electrification
  3. Supporting Infrastructure for transport and storage of electricity, hydrogen and CO2
  4. Timely planning, consenting, and permitting processes
  5. Comprehensive carbon accounting and standards
  6. Resilient low-carbon supply chains
  7. Net zero skills and workforce

Please download the report HERE.

For further info on IDRIC’s planned policy research and engagement in these areas, please get in touch with the IDRIC Policy Team.

BEIS – Secondment Opportunity

December 19, 2022

Want to apply your scientific background to inform policymakers and build your network?

Interested in supporting the UK government to reach net zero?

BEIS Climate Science Team are looking for a knowledgeable and motivated scientist to provide analysis and advice on greenhouse gas removals (GGRs). Funded by BEIS, this secondment will support both UK efforts to reach net zero, and broader global climate action.

The successful candidate will provide advice to Government on a wide range of greenhouse gas removal technologies – both engineered and nature-based. This will include their risks and co-benefits, and their realistic sustainable potential contribution to net zero targets. You will work closely with policy colleagues in BEIS and other government departments, and also with the academic community.

The secondment is funded by BEIS and can be full-time or part-time, for up to 12 months, starting in March/April 2023. It can be based at BEIS’ London, Birmingham, Salford, Darlington, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, or Cardiff offices. BEIS has moved to hybrid working so there will be plenty of opportunity to work remotely.

Salary upon request.

Eligibility

BEIS would love to hear from you if you are currently working in a related field in a UK university, Public Sector Research Establishment or UKRI-funded Catapult. No prior knowledge of GGRs is needed but background in environmental sciences, and/or industrial engineering, would be strongly advantageous.

You will have a physical science degree and a relevant post-graduate degree or equivalent work experience (minimum two to three years). You will have an understanding of climate science and climate change mitigation options. You need to be able to critically appraise the claims of both academics and entrepreneurs and have demonstrated experience of presenting technical information to non-specialists in both oral and written form. You will organise your time efficiently and will be able to work flexibly and independently on various pieces of work.

Application

Applications should consist of a CV and 1 page covering letter addressing the skills required in the attached specification. Although it is strongly encouraged to contact BEIS to discuss in more depth. To do so, please contact Skills Research Officer at IDRIC to be connected. Deadline: Wednesday 4th January.

Workforce planning for industrial decarbonisation – Report Launch

December 9, 2022

IDRIC-ECITB and roundtable was held at the RSA House in London on the 22nd Nov. This event was part of the IDRIC policy forum series and took a deep dive into the skills and training needed to deploy and scale-up industrial decarbonisation projects. The key message was that skills are, and will be, the limiting factor to decarbonising UK industry and there is an urgent need to scale up interventions to increase capacity and skill development. The panel consisted of representatives from DfE, BEIS, BP, TUC, Baker Dearing Educational Trust, CATCH and University of Chester, who brought insight of the activities occurring in this space to develop capacity and skills. The event coincided with the launch of IDRIC skills project.
