Imagining a net-zero Teesside: Actors, networks, and expectations in industrial decarbonisation megaprojects

Environmental Research Communications

January 2025

This paper examines the challenges and opportunities in decarbonising Teesside, an industrial cluster in Northeast England. It explores how public and private stakeholders are shaping the region’s transition to net zero, focusing on large-scale projects like carbon capture and hydrogen production. While these technologies hold promise, they are not yet commercially viable, raising concerns about their long-term effectiveness. The study highlights the risks of relying too heavily on a limited set of solutions and questions whether expected cost and emission reductions can be achieved. It warns that overconfidence in these technologies may obscure the significant challenges ahead.
