Aim

This project focuses on learning from most prominent international industrial decarbonisation projects and related national policies (business models, planning, permitting, regulation and standards, skills & training) to inform UK policy and practice among clusters and dispersed sites. It explores the diversity of approaches and rationale for (cluster) decarbonisation in other regions in traditional hydrocarbon basins (with an emphasis on finding analogues across the USA, UAE, Norway), collects evidence on best practices, enablers & impediments, delivering models and strategies adopted by key actors, and other core themes such as skills and social acceptance.

This research will inform UK industries about the good practices and competitors’ developments in other jurisdictions, and policy support mechanisms. At the cluster level, being equipped with this knowledge will help the UK industrial actors advocate for their visions of the desirable/favourable policy regime (including funding) in their negotiations with the government, and more actively shape policy and politics of industrial decarbonisation in the UK and worldwide. At the dispersed sites level, by focusing on the industrial decarbonisation projects in different countries, this research will provide evidence for comparative analysis of the UK with other international leaders and net zero implementation efforts.
