COP28: A defining opportunity for our leaders to bring global climate ambitions back on track
A message from our Director and Champion:
COP28 kicks off today. Nearly 3 decades since the first COP, will COP28 be a key summit to prevent climate change?
The first Global Stocktake (GST) since the Paris Agreement will take place at COP28 and it is no secret that GST will confirm that we are off track. This could (and should) be a sobering wake up call for our leaders to take global action.
The theme of COP28 is ‘Unite. Act. Deliver’. COP28 needs to supercharge our implementation pathways with an inclusive approach for adaptation, mitigation, and loss and damage together with climate finance frameworks that bring us back on track by 2030.
The COP28 two-week thematic programme brings together a wide range of stakeholders aiming to closing the gap between ambition and action.
I will be attending COP28 again this year as member of the United Nations Council of Engineers for the Energy Transition (CEET) under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General. This is a unique opportunity to be a technology diplomat and be part of a number of discussions and events in the blue zone and green zone, including advancing just and inclusive energy, reducing emissions from energy intensive industries, carbon markets, technologies without borders and so much more!
COP28 is not a time to give up. We have not run out of time, but we need to increase pace and scale globally. Yes, we all have a part to play and be change makers. And COP28 is the defining moment for our leaders to lead.
