Time-lapse 3D imaging and modelling of acid-rock interactions within a mudstone: Implications for cap-rock behaviour during carbon storage

This paper examines the impact of acidic fluids on mudstone, a type of rock that acts as a natural barrier in geological carbon storage. By using advanced 3D imaging, the study captures real-time changes in the rock when exposed to acid, mimicking conditions during CO2 injection. The findings reveal how fractures can initially close but later expand, potentially increasing the risk of leaks. Computer models further show how acid moves through the rock, dissolving key minerals over time. These insights help improve our understanding of how to maintain caprock stability and ensure the safe long-term storage of carbon underground.
