Spectral characterisation of non-premixed H2/CO2 jet flames

This study examines how adding CO2 to hydrogen flames changes their appearance and light emissions, testing two flame types with CO2 content ranging from 0-60%. Using cameras and spectrographs, researchers found CO2 addition shifts flame colour from red to strongly blue, boosting visibility up to fourfold, while suppressing other emissions. Blue light intensity peaked at 40-50% CO2. Certain wavelength-intensity ratios correlated consistently with CO2 content regardless of flame type, suggesting a way to monitor H2/CO2 blending ratios in real time industrially. Flame height responses to CO2 addition also differed between laminar and turbulent conditions.
