Spatial and temporal evolution of laser-induced flame kernels in a methane jet injected into air

April 2025

This paper explores how tiny flames created by lasers—called flame kernels—develop in a fast-moving stream of methane gas. By adjusting the laser’s energy and direction, the researchers observed how the flames grow, change shape, and move in the moments just after ignition. They found that the orientation of the laser affects the flame’s structure and growth pattern, with higher energy making the flame more stable and brighter. These findings help scientists better understand how to control ignition in gas flows, which is important for designing safer and more efficient engines and combustion systems.
