Reconfiguring European industry for net-zero: A qualitative review of hydrogen and carbon capture utilisation and storage benefits and implementation challenges
Energy & Environmental Science
May 2024
This paper explores the opportunities and challenges of reducing industrial carbon emissions using hydrogen and carbon capture, utilisation, and storage technologies. Focusing on industrial sites in the UK, it examines the progress of these technologies, their potential benefits, and the key barriers to their adoption. It also considers who might gain or lose from their implementation, including potential impacts on communities and vulnerable groups. Drawing on over 100 interviews, site visits, and academic research, the paper provides practical recommendations for policymakers and industry leaders to ensure a fair and effective transition to net-zero industrial production.
