Pilot-scale demonstration and practical challenges of bioenergy with CCS (BECCS) using rotating packed bed

Fuel

February 2026

This paper investigates how CO2 can be captured from biomass flue gases, which could help achieve negative greenhouse gas emissions crucial for meeting net zero targets. It assesses the performance of a pilot-scale rotating packed bed absorber and examines how impurities in the flue gas, such as particles and metals, interact with the solvent used in the process. The study found that most of the metals in the solvent came from corrosion within the system rather than directly from the flue gas, and that some naturally occurring metals in biomass may even help slow down solvent degradation. These findings provide valuable early insights for advancing BECCS technologies and ensuring their reliability in practice.
