Hydrogen-induced mineral alteration: A review in the context of underground hydrogen storage (UHS) in saline aquifers

Earth-Science Reviews

December 2024

This paper examines the potential of storing hydrogen underground in saline aquifers, a method that could support the transition to clean energy. While this technology is not yet widely used, understanding how hydrogen interacts with underground rocks and fluids under high pressure and temperature is crucial. The study reviews existing research on these chemical reactions, identifying key knowledge gaps. It finds that hydrogen is unlikely to react with common silicate minerals but may affect other minerals like pyrite, sulphates, and carbonates. The findings suggest that future hydrogen storage should focus on silicate-rich formations to improve efficiency and security.
