Geochemical negative emissions technologies

Frontiers

June 2022

This paper explores geochemical negative emissions technologies (NETs), which use natural minerals to capture and store CO₂ from the atmosphere. These methods include enhancing natural weathering processes, reacting minerals with CO₂ to form stable rocks, and modifying ocean chemistry to absorb more CO₂. Some approaches work deep underground, while others take place at the surface or in industrial settings. While promising, these technologies are still in the early stages, with limited real-world testing. The paper reviews current progress, key challenges, and opportunities, and outlines a roadmap for scaling up these solutions to help tackle climate change.
