Framing industrial decarbonisation technologies in the public sphere: narratives from the digital ‘town square’ in the United Kingdom

Environmental Research Communications

December 2024

This paper examines how discussions about industrial decarbonisation unfold on Twitter, often referred to as a ‘digital town square.’ It focuses on intermediary agents—such as experts and organisations—that influence public debate by sharing knowledge and shaping narratives about decarbonisation technologies. By analysing tweets, the study reveals that these narratives closely align with the views of major industries and the UK government. This alignment raises concerns that certain decarbonisation strategies may not fully consider public concerns, potentially affecting their social acceptance and leading to resistance. The findings highlight the need for more inclusive discussions around industrial decarbonisation policies.
