Decarbonisation pathways for industrial clusters through multi-energy systems
Sustainable Futures
June 2025
This study aims to develop a dynamic simulation tool to support the planning and evaluation of decarbonisation pathways for industrial clusters. Using a multi-vector energy systems approach, the tool models complex interactions between energy technologies and assesses their impacts on energy efficiency, emissions and costs. Multi-energy industrial cluster case study was analysed and it found that electrified heating had the greatest influence on performance due to the cluster’s high heat-to-electricity demand ratio. Integrating renewable energy and electrified heating reduced energy costs by 87%, emissions by 49%, and energy use by 44%, while increasing energy efficiency by 81% compared with the baseline.
