Co-deployment of bioenergy with carbon capture and storage in the UK: Growth or gridlock?

Sustainable Production and Consumption

October 2024

This study evaluates a BECCS-Hub within the North-West Industrial Carbon Capture cluster. It examines five different BECCS supply chains as well as the carbon performance and scalability variations crucial for aligning with evolving BECCS business models. The study highlights challenges around securing enough biomass to fuel these systems, especially when there is competition for resources, and warns that this competition could slow down the UK’s efforts to reach net zero carbon emissions. The research recommends flexible and well-planned strategies to ensure that BECCS can be scaled up efficiently in the future.
