An inventory of UK mineral resources suitable for enhanced rock weathering

International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control

December 2023

This paper explores the potential of Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW), a process that involves adding crushed silicate minerals to soil to help remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. To understand how feasible this approach is in the UK, the study maps out where suitable rock resources are located, how much is currently extracted, and what waste materials could be repurposed for ERW. It also considers the environmental and social impacts of rock extraction. By analysing transport distances and soil conditions, the study identifies the most suitable croplands for ERW, providing insights into its practical implementation in the UK.
