Bridging the Gaps Enhancing CCUS and engineered GGRs through collaborative discussion
16th January 2025
In January 2025, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), IDRIC and CO2RE hosted a targeted online workshop, bringing together 37 stakeholders from industry, academia and the public sector. The workshop aimed to surface existing technical evidence and identify key gaps in the deployment of Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) and engineered Greenhouse Gas Removals (GGRs). Discussions focused on system integration, scalability, monitoring and verification, and infrastructure – with the goal of prioritising where further research and innovation are most needed.
The session provided a valuable opportunity to engage with active organisations, share insights on barriers to deployment and explore what technical evidence is required to address them. It also supported knowledge exchange among subject matter experts and informed DESNZ’s understanding of where the evidence base is strong and where it needs to be strengthened to support effective policy and innovation strategies.
This document brings together and summarises the discussions that took place during the workshop. It is intended as a reflection of the wide-ranging perspectives and contributions shared by participants.
