This report addresses public awareness and perceptions of Carbon Capture Use and Storage (CCUS), a key technology for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Despite its importance, public awareness of CCUS is very limited, even in directly affected areas. To improve understanding, it is crucial to consider the backdrop of prior knowledge and experience that shape people’s responses to CCUS. This study uses Place-Based Participatory Speculative Fiction to explore how people imagine CCUS implementation and its impact, based on their existing knowledge and experiences. The stories, created by students and educators from sectors relevant to CCUS in the Scottish Cluster, reveal the complex social, cultural, and historical factors influencing perceptions of CCUS, highlighting the need to address misconceptions and consider broader technological contexts in communication efforts.
