POLICY BRIEF: Skills for decarbonising UK industry

October 2024

For an effective and timely transition to net zero, the UK needs a diverse and skilled workforce, particularly in the industrial clusters. People are needed across a wide range of roles, from technical construction and engineering roles to more general transferable positions, such as in finance, marketing and data science. Ensuring we have the workforce needed will require a range of targeted approaches. This will include skills provisioning, signposting, funding and policy focussing on enabling sector transfer from existing roles, with upskilling and reskilling as appropriate, as well as training of new recruits. This briefing highlights the challenges and potential solutions for ensuring we have the skills needed for industrial decarbonisation going forward.
