Understanding collaboration patterns on funded research projects: A network analysis

Network Science

November 2022

This paper explores how organisations collaborate on UK research projects funded by four key UK research councils. It analyses partnerships between universities and other institutions, examining how these connections form. The study finds that collaboration in science fields is dominated by a few key players, creating a more hierarchical network compared to social sciences and humanities projects. Additionally, universities in the elite Russell Group are significantly more involved in collaborations across all research councils. These findings highlight inequalities in research partnerships and raise important questions about access to funding and opportunities in the UK research system.
