The infrastructural ecologies of industrial decarbonisation: Visual methods and psychosocial logics in place-based public engagement

Energy Research & Social Science

February 2025

This paper presents research on public responses to industrial decarbonisation gathered from deliberative workshops carried out in Wales, UK. It explores how people living and working near energy and industrial sites respond to major changes aimed at reducing carbon emissions. As industries and energy systems shift, these communities experience the impacts first-hand, raising concerns about fairness and inequality. The research introduces the idea of “infrastructural ecologies” to show how local places are shaped by both global forces and everyday experiences. The study examines how opinions about industrial change form and evolve, offering insights into how decarbonisation can be made more inclusive and socially just.
