Technical, economic, and environmental assessment of CO2 ship transport in carbon capture and storage

Journal of Environmental Management

January 2025

This article explores the potential of CO2 shipping to support carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) efforts in the UK, introducing a techno-economic and environmental framework evaluating the maritime transportation of 5.9 million tonnes of CO2 annually from the Solent region. This volume is equivalent to removing approximately 1.3 million cars from the roads. The assessment covers carbon capture, liquefaction, maritime transport, energy utilisation, and storage processes. The research highlights the importance of cost-effectiveness in making CO2 transport by sea viable. It identifies strategies such as using larger, low-pressure vessels, offering port and energy incentives, and increasing carbon pricing to reduce costs and environmental impacts. By improving maritime CO2 transport, this study supports scaling up CCUS and addressing climate change challenges.
