Promoting e-chemical production by optimising the cathode–anode pair

Chemical Engineering Journal

February 2025

This paper explores how improving both the cathode and anode in electrolysers can enhance the production of sodium acetate, a key chemical for industry. While previous research has focused mainly on the cathode, this study shows that optimising the full electrode pair boosts efficiency. Using advanced simulations and experiments, the researchers found that reaction speed affects how acetate spreads, and that methanol plays a crucial role in its formation from syngas. Their findings suggest a more effective way to produce chemicals sustainably, helping to develop greener methods for industrial chemical production in the future.
