Preventing salt precipitation in CO2 storage processes in saline aquifers: Dissolved-water CO2 injection method

Energy & Fuels

February 2025

Storing CO2 in deep, salty aquifers can be challenging because salt can build up and block the storage process. The study investigates a novel approach called dissolved-water CO2 injection, where water is added to CO2 before it is injected into the rock. This reduces salt build-up and improves storage efficiency. Using computer simulations, the researchers found that this method significantly reduces salt precipitation. The paper also considers potential risks, such as corrosion, and discusses ways to manage them.
