Operability-economics trade-offs in adsorption-based CO2 capture processes

Communications Engineering

July 2024

This paper examines how carbon capture technology can be adapted to support a low-carbon energy system. As renewable energy sources like wind and solar can be unpredictable, backup power needs to be flexible while still reducing carbon emissions. The study examines a specific method—pressure-vacuum swing adsorption—for capturing CO2 and assesses its design, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. The findings highlight a trade-off: making the system more adaptable to changing conditions can reduce its efficiency. However, careful design can improve flexibility while maintaining performance, helping to integrate carbon capture into future clean energy solutions.
