Evaluating the impact of the viscosity ratio on miscible viscous fingering in subsurface processes

SSN

December 2024

This paper examines how different fluid properties influence the way they mix and spread in porous materials, a process important for underground engineered application, such as storing carbon dioxide. When a less viscous fluid pushes a thicker one, it can create unstable patterns that affect how efficiently fluids move. The study explores how fluid viscosity differences shape these patterns and identifies two main mixing behaviours — one dominated by diffusion and the other by current. By understanding these dynamics, we can better predict and control fluid behaviour in underground reservoirs, improving techniques for energy storage and environmental protection.
