Effect of dissolved oxygen concentration on activated sludge bacterial community and oxygen uptake rate in a SBR using co-produced oxygen from a PEM hydrogen electrolyser

Journal of Water Process Engineering

March 2024

This paper explores how the efficiency of aerobic wastewater treatment process can be improved using oxygen produced as a by-product from electrolytic hydrogen production. The study tested a lab-scale treatment system over five months and found that it effectively removed pollutants from wastewater, even with varying oxygen levels. The study also found changes in the types and diversity of bacteria depending on the oxygen levels. Using co-produced oxygen could cut energy costs in half compared to standard systems, making the process more efficient and sustainable.
