Developing a new conceptual salt precipitation model in CO2 storage processes in aquifers

SSN

January 2025

This paper examines the challenges posed by salt build-up in underground storage sites for CO2. Deep saline aquifers have great potential for storing CO2, but their high salt content can lead to blockages when injected CO2 causes water to evaporate, leaving behind solid salt. This can reduce storage efficiency and create operational risks. The study develops a new model to explain how salt builds up and how different factors, such as flow dynamics, affect the process. The findings help clarify previous uncertainties and offer insights for improving CO2 storage safety and effectiveness.
