Comparative energy and exergy analysis of ortho-para hydrogen and non-ortho-para hydrogen conversion in hydrogen liquefaction

International Journal of Hydrogen Energy

August 2024

This paper compares two approaches to hydrogen liquefaction—one that includes a chemical conversion step called ortho-para hydrogen conversion, and one that does not. Using computer simulations, the study designs and tests both processes, showing that the version with this conversion uses significantly less energy and works more efficiently. The process cools hydrogen to extremely low temperatures in several stages using specialised refrigerants. This study finds that incorporating ortho-para conversion improves both energy use and overall performance, suggesting it should be considered in future hydrogen liquefaction plant designs. Further improvements could make both approaches even more efficient.
