Bioprocess modelling assisted analysis of light and temperature effects on Dunaliella tertiolecta’s growth in bicarbonate/carbonate medium for algae-based carbon capture

Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering

April 2025

This paper explores how a type of algae, Dunaliella tertiolecta, could be used to capture and recycle CO2 in a more flexible and cost-effective way. Instead of using gas, which can be difficult to handle, the study uses a liquid form of carbon (bicarbonate and carbonate). The researchers tested how different light and temperature conditions affect the algae’s growth and ability to convert carbon. They developed the first detailed model for this process in Dunaliella, helping us better understand how to make algae-based carbon capture work reliably at an industrial scale.
