Relying on petrochemically-derived platform chemicals conflicts with decarbonisation targets, whilst at the same time the production rate of waste is increasing. Producing carboxylic acids by fermenting organic waste not only mitigates environmental impact but also offers economic and sustainable advantages over biogas.
This study consolidates recent data on carboxylate production and recovery, facilitating accessibility of previous research, highlighting gaps in the literature and a lack of consensus on optimal methods for carboxylate production and recovery. Finally, the study underscores the need for further research, particularly at pilot and industrial scales, to establish widely applicable and optimised carboxylate production and recovery processes.
