A new straightforward darcy-scale compositional solver in OpenFOAM for CO2 /water mutual solubility in CO2 storage processes in aquifers

This paper explores a new approach to modelling how CO2 and water interact in underground storage sites, which is important for carbon capture and storage (CCS) efforts. Using OpenFOAM, an open-source software for simulating fluid flow, the study introduces a new model that improves how these interactions are represented. The model was tested against real-world scenarios and compared with an industry-standard simulator, showing highly accurate results. This work enhances existing modelling techniques and provides a valuable tool for understanding how CO2 behaves in storage, helping to improve strategies for reducing carbon emissions.
