A holistic platform for accelerating sorbent-based carbon capture

Nature

July 2024

This paper introduces the PrISMa (Process-Informed design of tailormade Sorbent Materials) platform, a comprehensive tool designed to accelerate the development of carbon capture technologies. PrISMa integrates materials, process design, techno-economics, and life-cycle assessment, informing various stakeholders about the cost-effectiveness of technologies, process configurations, and locations. It reveals top-performing sorbents’ molecular characteristics and provides insights on environmental impacts, co-benefits, and trade-offs. The paper compares over sixty case studies capturing CO2 from various sources in five global regions using different technologies, demonstrating how this holistic approach is crucial for developing efficient carbon capture solutions essential to our efforts towards a net-zero world.
