Establishing an inter-cluster batchwise carbon capture and storage network in the UK

SSRN – Proceedings of the 17th Greenhouse Gas Control Technologies Conference (GHGT-17) 20-24 October 2024

January 2025

This paper uses a CO2 transport and storage modelling framework developed at Imperial College London and real point source emissions data to explore how different methods of transporting captured CO2 can help the UK meet its emissions reduction targets. It focuses on alternatives to pipelines—such as ships, trains, and lorries—for moving CO2 from industrial sources to storage sites. The study compares different infrastructure designs over a 30-year period and examines cost, efficiency, and environmental impact. It is shown that while rail transport could be a suitable option, it may strain existing rail infrastructure capacity. The findings highlight the importance of planning flexible and efficient CO2 transport networks, beyond considering solely the pipeline option, to support the UK’s decarbonisation goals.
