Demonstration of negative CO2 emissions with BECCS using process intensification

SSRN – Proceedings of the 17th Greenhouse Gas Control Technologies Conference (GHGT-17) 20-24 October 2024

December 2024

This study explores how a new type of carbon capture system with much smaller footprint than the conventional plants can help remove CO2 emissions from biomass energy (BECCS), potentially resulting in negative emissions. Researchers tested an advanced next generation carbon capture plant using a rotating packed bed system to capture CO2 from biomass flue gases. They compared the performance of two chemical solvents—one commonly used (MEA) and one developed by Carbon Clean (APBS-CDRMax®)—to assess how much CO2 was captured and how much energy the process required. Results showed that APBS-CDRMax® offered promising performance, with comparative capture efficiency and potentially lower energy use than MEA at different operating conditions. Moreover, the impact of impurities in biomass combustion flue gases has been analysed on the degradation behaviour of the commonly used capture solvent (MEA).
