Aim
This project directly builds upon IDRIC project MIP 6.8 AMICUS: Analysis Methods for Improved Capture Using Solvents by applying and expanding the analytical techniques developed therein. AMICUS (MIP 6.8) focuses on measurement methods for effective post-combustion carbon capture (PCC) in UK industrial clusters. The research conducted within AMICUS has granted an opportunity to accelerate impact by implementing and refining laboratory analytical methods for on-line CO2 loading and concentration measurements at a large-scale industrial site, Tata Chemicals Europe’s 40,000 tonne/year CCU plant in Winnington.
This Impact Accelerator project will include an experimental campaign to investigate if the developed laboratory techniques can be implemented at the industrial scale and provide value for all industrial users of amine capture.
The planned activities within AMICUS-AI will significantly accelerate impact within industrial clusters in several ways:
- On-Site Testing at Tata Chemicals Europe: the project will implement and refine the laboratory analytical methods at Tata Chemicals Europe’s large-scale CCU plant in Winnington. This on-site experimental campaign will determine the feasibility of applying the techniques at an industrial scale, benefiting all users of amine capture. The active on-site involvement of academics from the University of Sheffield ensures rapid knowledge transfer and adaptation to real-world constraints.
- Enhancing BAT Reviews with Real-World Data: the project team collaborates closely with the Environment Agency (EA) and BEIS on Best Available Technology (BAT) reviews for PCC applications. The results from applying the AMICUS project techniques at an industrial scale, with the help of this impact accelerator, will enhance the content of these reviews, providing immediate benefits to both regulators and cluster industries relying on them for PCC permitting.
- Improving Industrial Performance for Effective PCC: The results obtained from the on-site CO2 loading and concentration measurements will play a pivotal role in informing and enhancing process operations at the Tata PCC site. These precise measurements will provide valuable insights, enabling the optimisation of PCC processes and contributing to improved efficiency and environmental sustainability within the industrial setting.
