Decarbonising UK industrial clusters with a mobile thermal energy storage system

IDRIC Project IA 2.1

Prof Yulong Ding

Principal Investigator

University of Birmingham

Aim

The objective of this project is to advance the MESH system developed through IDRIC project MIP 4.2 A flexibly integrated solution for gas compression and industrial thermal processing decarbonisation to a higher TRL by focusing on large-scale fabrication of heat storage materials, implementing automation in the control system, and enhancing transportation and operation safety and reliability.

These improvements aim to achieve the following:

  1. Standardised mass production of energy storage materials.
  2. Automatic charging and discharging control system for the MESH system.
  3. Long-duration and long-distance transport capability of thermal energy. These enhancements will increase the MESH technology to a TRL of 6-7, enabling the system to be applied to a wider range of industrial applications.

Furthermore, this follow-up project will enhance the IP aspects (in addition to the existing filed patent), accelerating the commercialisation and industrial implementation of the technology.
