Biological activated aerosols for industrial decarbonisation

IDRIC Project FF 4-8

Dr Matthew Hobbs

Principal Investigator

University of Sheffield

Aim

This project’s aim is to demonstrate the use of bio-activated aerosols for industrial decarbonisation at TATA Steel in the South Wales Cluster, accumulating new knowledge to enable the innovation to be developed further.

The measurable objectives will be:

  • Deploy bio-activated algae carbon sequestration system at TATA Steel and expose it to emissions from its blast furnace.
  • Use expertise within hyperspectral imaging and infrared optical sensing to optically measure CO2 concentration within algae cells.
  • Use electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy facilities to investigate the impact of the carbon capture upon the algae cells.
