Aim
This project will establish an inter-cluster batchwise (i.e., ships, rail and lorries) carbon capture and storage (CCS) network in the UK, to accelerate the decarbonisation of industrial clusters.
It will apply the Multi-period, Multi-mode, and Multi-objective Mixed integer linear programming model, developed in IDRIC’s project MIP 6.3 Advanced multitemporal modelling and optimisation of carbon dioxode transport and storage networks to perform deterministic, stochastic, and multi-objective analysis of the inter-cluster batchwise network. The ultimate goal is to accelerate the integration, through sizing and optimisation, of batchwise (i.e. ships, rail and lorries) transportation networks with CCS clusters under development by providing pre-feasibility estimates of costs and sizing of infrastructure, GHG emissions of the network and routes for the transport modes adopted.
The main objectives of the project are to:
- Identify potential candidates for an inter-cluster batchwise network within the selected clusters (i.e., Northwest, South Wales, Solent, and Black Country).
- Consider scenarios of CO2 emissions profile for cluster stationary emitters over a 30-year horizon.
- Determine unfeasible network links due to factors such as port draught, road and railway limitations, and regulatory and societal acceptance issues.
- Update the cost assumptions within Imperial College’s models based on the identified technology costs from each cluster.
- Tailor existing models and report the findings, including presentations to be used by stakeholders in their cluster plans.
