Utilisation of industrial waste ammonia form steelmaking in solid oxide electrolysis cell technology for efficient and clean hydrogen production

IDRIC Project FF 3-2

Dr Kleitos Panagi

Principal Investigator

University of South Wales

Aim

The aim of this project is to enhance the utilisation of industrial waste ammonia in solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) technology for hydrogen production. The research will contribute to the development of low-carbon hydrogen production from a complex ammonia waste stream produced from steelmaking processes, for which current disposal methods are energy-intensive, waste a useful resource and contribute to greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions. Working with Tata Steel, this project will involve conducting experiments to fully characterise degradation mechanisms and improve the durability of the cells by incorporating precious and transition metals into the SOEC fuel electrode. In order to demonstrate industrial viability, the objectives are to increase the hydrogen production rate of SOECs by 40%, increase the efficiency of SOECs by 25%, decrease the degradation rate by 30% and limit emissions of tars and nitrous oxide to less than 5 mg m-3. The findings will be disseminated through social media, an international conference and an open access peer-reviewed journal publication to maximise impact.
