Investigating novel fluid injection approaches for CO2 storage optimisation

IDRIC Project FF 3-18

Dr James Minto

Principal Investigator

University of Strathclyde

Aim

The aim of this project is to propose and assess the efficacy of a new strategy for controlling scCO2 plume migration in the subsurface: high frequency micropulsed pumping. This will proceed through pore-scale modelling and microfluidic experiments to understand the mechanisms of transport and mixing under steady and pulsed flow coupled with industry/cluster engagement to steer requirements and investigate opportunities for future implementation.

The key objectives of the project are

  1. two-way engagement with industry,
  2. develop a pore-scale flow model for single and multiphase flow that captures the mixing mechanisms of pulsed pumping,
  3. directly observe these mixing mechanisms in pulsed microfluidic experiments.
