Determining optimum pyrolysis conditions for biochar to be used as metallurgical coal replacement – in support of deep decarbonisation of large UK industrial emitters based within the Humber cluster

IDRIC Project FF 2-2

Dr Amir Badiee

Principal Investigator

University of Lincoln

Aim

This project aims to develop a sustainable alternative for metallurgical coal via assessing the impact of pyrolysis conditions on biochar properties and benchmarking it against the current metallurgical coals. The work will optimise the techno/economic/environmental behaviour of the resulting biochar fuel and pyrolizer derived energy, to provide commercial plant operating conditions for any UK based carbon/energy intensive operation. This is a unique whole system approach with embedded circular economy.
