Ammonium salts formation in impure CO2 streams

IDRIC Project FF 1-5

JP Martin Trusler

Principal Investigator

Imperial College London

Aim

The overall aim of the project is to investigate the potential formation of ammonium salts in impure CO2 under pipeline condition. The specific objectives are to determine (a) the conditions under which salts form and (b) the rate of formation for a range of NH3 and H2O impurities present in the CO2 test fluid.

The work will enable CO2-pipeline specifications to be devised with increased confidence and to de-risk pipeline investment within the industrial clusters including, for example, within the HyNet project. The work is of generic interest and is especially relevant when the CO2 stream is likely to contain NH3 as an impurity (e.g. following capture with aqueous amine solvents). As such it will contribute to UK industrial decarbonisation by assisting in the setting of pipeline-purity specifications and de-risking pipeline investment.
