High-efficiency green hydrogen production and compression for industrial decarbonisation

IDRIC Project FF 1-1

Dr Sumit Roy

Principal Investigator

Durham University

Aim

The project aims to demonstrate and explore the potential of electrolysers with metal hydride compressors and integration of renewable hydrogen into the UK’s industrial clusters. Its objectives are to:

  1. Develop energy system models for PEM electrolysis integrated with a metal hydride (MH) hydrogen compression and storage for hydrogen use in industrial processes.
  2. Perform a lab-scale demonstration of PEM electrolysis coupled with waste heat driven metal hydride compressor for higher efficiency hydrogen production and compression.
  3. Quantify the techno-economic and scale-up potential of the PEM electrolysis powered by renewable electricity, and MH compression driven by waste heat.
